Finding sashiko in London

In the summer of 2025, I attended workshops at Yi Crafts, a small East Asian craft studio in London. The instructor was a wonderful Chinese Yifan, who loves dyeing fabrics with indigo. Yifan explained the basics of sashiko embroidery and guided practical work.

Yi Crats studio focuses on the disappearing traditional crafts and cuisine of Chinese minority nations. In addition to sashiko, experienced instructors of Asian origin teach students how to dye with plants, Chinese calligraphy, embroidery, ribbon weaving, traditional Chinese kite making, paper lantern making, and bamboo weaving.
