Green Turn

For me, both going green and patchwork are about recycling. There are so many things that can be repaired and reused instead of buying new. When something is so broken that it can't be fixed, you have to think about whether it's possible to make something new out of it.

That's exactly how this herringbone quilt was made. I chose men's shirts as the material. There are shirts here that I bought from thrift stores as well as shirts that my husband used. If only the collar is worn and the rest of the shirt is intact, it's a great material for patchwork. This quilt uses 15 different shirts, plus a few scraps of fabric.

The name of the blanket, "Continue with the herring," describes the wish that we would be able to operate in such a way that there would be enough clean water and fish in the water. Since the fish on the deck is our national fish, the herring, it can be taken more broadly as a wish that our entire nation would continue.
